New South Tamworth greenkeeper Mick Woods was enjoying the carnival after bringing a couple of ringers to town for the weekend from his former club Guildford.
The two Johns – Lodge and Clarke – formed a crack team that had them on top of the table all weekend and heading into the final match on Sunday afternoon as the only unbeaten team on four wins.
“I don’t know if they are a crack team but it is good to have a game with some mates I haven’t seen for a while,” Woods said.
“And good to be leading too.”
Unfortunately for the Guildford three, they drew the Fred Thompson-skippered local team, who, on their home green, put the visitors to the sword in the final game to take the win after only dropping the one match.
In fact the competition was so tight that the loss dropped the Guildford side to fourth, as a fellow West Tamworth team skippered by Dave Mackey finished second and Peter Schroeder’s team third with all finishing on four wins.
West Tamworth vice-president Col Choice said that the weather was great for the 16 teams that entered this year.
“The numbers were slightly down but we have had a great weekend of bowls,” Choice said.
Since arriving on Friday afternoon the Guildford three hadn’t seen much of the town that wasn’t a bowling green or the club interior, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
“It has been a great weekend,” Woods said.
“Moving to Tamworth was the best thing I have ever done for my family.
“It is much more relaxed and everyone has been really friendly and approachable.”
