Streater defends a title he won at his home course last year with a final-round 70.
Ben Lockwood, who was two shots behind last year, and third-placed John Trevaskis are also entered in a field also containing young Walcha golfer Andrew Brennan.
Tamworth pair Tom Gill and Jock McPherson will be favourites for the junior title and Gunnedah’s Danny Jones and Tamworth Mike Bird will be hard to beat in the veterans.
Five divisions will be contested by some 70 players, Longyard Golf Club spokesman Trevor Leese said.
“Just looking at the draw, Luke Streater will be hard to beat.
“He’s been winning just about everything the last few years. “
He thinks Lockwood and Trevaskis will also be in contention with good numbers in A, B and C grades as well as the vets and juniors.
One interesting player is former St George rugby league star Nathan Blacklock.
“He had a game here on Wednesday and finished second to Luke Ninnes. Luke had 44 points and Nathan 42 – that’s pretty good scoring,” Leese said.
It was a big day for the club too, with some 145 starters on a day where the Tamworth course was inundated with more than 150 ladies for the second round of the annual NNWDLGA Open.
That tournament concluded with Thursday’s Foursomes Championship (see page 101).
Leese is hoping the CNDGA might beef up its annual Open tournament and open it up to entries from outside the CNDGA as the N&NWDLGA has done.
A number of players from Newcastle, the Central Coast and the Gold Coast teed it up in this week’s three-day N&NWDLGA Open.
LAST YEAR’S CNDGA RESULTS (Gunnedah Golf Club): A Grade - Luke Streater 70, Ben Lockwood 72. B Grade: Peter Ellis 83. C Grade: Geoff Doubleday 84. Vets: Steve Mathews 81. Junior: Jock McPherson 84.
