Council and police were notified of the incident about 8.15am this morning where it appears a water main on a median strip in the northern end of Darling St has burst.
A spokeswoman for Tamworth Regional Council said the water main had extended from the Water Treatment Plant and up to the Victoria Park Reservoir.
The reservoir was shut off and water was now being directed from the Oxley Vale reservoir to ensure a continuation of supply.
"Residents may notice a discoloration in the water, this is because we are now sourcing it from another direction," she said.
"There is nothing wrong with the quality of the water but this will take most of the day to fix. "
The Leader understands water had flowed from the water main site down into Carthage St where it was then collected by storm water drains.
Asphalt has been lifted from the roads and council crews are on scene to assess the damage.
Council says to avoid the area if possible.
