The As had a 3-1 win and 1-nil loss while the Bs notched a 1-all draw and a 1-nil win from their first two games.
They were playing Hunter last night.
The As had a great start, with a two-goal win over Far North Coast.
“There was some good finishing by our strikers,” coach Brad Hall said.
“Nick O’Connor scored a nice reverse.”
Lachie Butler and Calvin Farmilo chimed in with the extras in a game Hall thought they controlled pretty well.
They were then pipped late by North West Sydney, the Sydney side slotting the match winner with only around three or four minutes to go.
“Physically they were a bit bigger,” Hall said.
“But we competed pretty well.
“We scrambled pretty well most of the match in defence.”
In saying that, they had their chances but they couldn’t put the ball in the net.
“It would have been good to hang onto a draw at the very least,” he said.
It’s left them with a big ask today.
They’ve got Illawarra first-up.
“We’ve got to win that to have any chance of going through,” Hall said.
Then it’s Metro South West.
They are looking the team to beat in Pool A, with good wins over Illawarra 4-nil and then Far North Coast 8-1.
North West Sydney are also undefeated after also accounting for Illawarra 2-1.
Newcastle are leading the way in Pool B, notching wins over Sydney South 4-nil and Grafton 5-3.
Playing in Division 3, the Tamworth Bs started with a draw against Port Macquarie on the grass.
It was a bit of a danger game, with the boys not having a lot of experience on grass.
They then edged out Grafton (2) but should have won by more.
“We had pretty much five times the circle penetrations they had,” coach Blair Chalmers said.
“We had at least 10-15 shots on goal to their three but we didn’t convert.”
That was in part credit to the Grafton keeper. He was quite agile and had a good game.
Today will be the big test for them.
“We play Bathurst who are looking the team to beat and Newcastle (2),” Chalmers said.
The first games commence at 8am with play running through to after 8pm.
