One of the most well-supported Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events in the region, Somerton residents were joined by those from around the area, including Tamworth, all raising money for cancer research and support services.
Co-organiser Sally Wood said about 90 people attended as they took the event over from her aunty, Edna McGrath.
“She had a huge year last year, I think because people knew it was her last year and wanted to support her,” she said.
“We are getting a feel for our first year and hopefully next year we will make a target and reach it. This year we’re just seeing how it goes.”
This year they exceeded their expectations and raised more than $3200.
“That was much more than we expected,” Mrs Wood said.
Mrs Wood said they had shared the event details on the local Facebook page and had sent plenty of emails around, as well as spreading the news via word-of-mouth.
“I’ve had family friends that are affected by cancer every day,” she said.
“The Biggest Morning Tea is just a really great initiative to get into. Cancer Council NSW is a fantastic charity to support as the money raised goes to a lot of local programs for cancer patients here.”
Mrs Wood said it was good to come together with good food and a hot cup of tea for a good cause.
Her aunt, Mrs McGrath, has run it for the past 15 years, with this being the 16th year Somerton has hosted the event.
Cancer Council NSW is a cause close to Mrs McGrath’s heart, as her husband passed away from cancer.
The Square Man Inn donated all the food and donated first prize in the raffle, which was a dinner for four valued at $350, with co-owner Kristy Breese the co-host of the morning tea.
More than 11,500 people will gather for the event across NSW to help raise over $4.8 million for cancer research, prevention, information and support, and advocacy services.
