I cannot ignore the letter in The Northern Daily Leader on Saturday, May 21 (“No logic in asking to pay more for milk”) written by a person from PETA.

With the risk of giving this extreme organisation any publicity, I quote one sentence that sums up its thinking : “Humans don’t need to drink cows’ milk, and we’re healthier if we don’t”.
PETA wouldn’t admit that cows’ milk is universally promoted as an excellent source of calcium and a complete protein source.
While for various reasons some people, particularly children, cannot drink cows’ milk, the majority of people can and do, which supports this $13 billion industry with a farm gate value of $4 billion.
It is outrageous that at a time when our Victorian dairy farmers are in such a bind and families are facing financial ruin, PETA would use the crisis to push its despised agenda.
Then again, when it advocates for public surveillance cameras in shearing sheds and describes animals as “fellow earthlings”, one gets a sense of what planet PETA is on.
