Sublime ball skills and movement around the court saw Peel jump to a big early lead in the first half and, while the visitors started clawing their way back in the third quarter, the home side put their foot down to run away with a 36-point win.
The victory now sees the school heading to Terrigal for the finals in early June and, despite being there several times before, coach Louise Taylor is just as excited as she was the first time.
“We were at the State Finals with the Under 15s last year but it doesn’t make me any less nervous,” Taylor said.
The nerves might only be the coach’s problem to deal with if the knockout match against Coffs Harbour is anything to go by, the Peel girls dominating all aspects of play.
“Sometimes the girls click,” Taylor said.
“I think their ball movement and speed around the court intimidated Coffs Harbour today.
“Our side is a bit smaller but they aren’t afraid of playing that physical style either.”
Heading into the finals, Taylor believes the girls can overcome a comparative lack of height and go far into the finals.
Their short passing, speed and dribbling skills were all on display in the match and Taylor believes having four girls in the State League squad is having an impact right through the team.
Chantelle Lee and Tshinta Knox are two Thunderbolt State League players who were in top form yesterday, while fellow squad members Kiata and Dhalara Knox put on some great interchange under the ring for points.
“The State League players have improved their shooting ability and I think playing in that league has got their confidence up,” Taylor said.
“They don’t get intimidated at all by other players.
“There is a lot of potential in this side.”
The girls will play in the finals at Terrigal on June 15/16.
