A CAR park slated for development in Griffen Ave will cater for 119 vehicles but residents in the surrounding area have suggested they would like more input into the plans before construction begins.
The car park in question is to be developed on the corner of Brisbane St and Griffin Ave adjacent to the railway line.
A number of cars already park on the grass there each day and have done so since a fence around the site was taken down after council purchased the land last year. Council bought the land to help meet the demand for all-day free parking in the city’s CBD.
Councillors helped council staff to determine a draft design for the car park at a workshop held earlier this year.
The draftdesign proposes the site will be sealed with asphalt and have 119 marked bays for parking as well as landscaping, plantings of Manchurian pear trees, kerbing and guttering and lighting.
On Monday night, Tamworth Regional Council senior engineer of infrastructure planning, Matt Ferris, and a number of councillors met with residents who live along and around the avenue site to discuss the proposed car park.
At Tuesday night’s council meeting standing orders were suspended to enable Liz Jones to speak to the rest of the councillors on behalf of residents.
During her speech Ms Jones expressed a number of concerns about the impact of the development on residents and road users and suggested a number of changes could be made to the proposal to make it more friendly for everyone.
Ms Jones highlighted several concerns residents of the narrow street had including increased traffic movement and decreased privacy.
She asked the councillors to review the proposal again and work in further consultation with residents to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome.
Council set aside $350,000 in this year’s budget to build the car park.
