ANTHONY Mabbott could not have farewelled training pacers in any better fashion after plundering four winners at Tamworth Paceway on Wednesday night.
The Tamworth baker didn’t start the night well after Woodlyn Girl, who he thought was his best chance on the night, was unplaced to Auchenflower Rose in the very first race.
However Mabbott rebounded to win with Any Left, Tosca Jack, Art Scene and Payton Mackenzie.
“Yeah, I thought she (Woodlyn Girl) was my best chance,” Mabbott admitted.
“I’ve had four winners there before a couple of times but that was my last night for a while.
“Dad’s (Ernie) taking over and it’s up to him what he does with Tosca Jack now.”
Tosca Jack, starting at $24, won a heat of the Tabcorp Park Menangle Where Horses Fly Series (1609m).
Narrabri-trained mare Will Thrill (Chris Shepherdson) won the first heat.
“It’s up to dad and the owner if they want to go to Menangle for the final with him,” Mabbott said.
“But he needs a mile.
“It worked out well for him – he’s much better over the mile.”
Mabbott’s other three winners – Any Left, Art Scene and Payton Mackenzie – are all for sale.
As for Mabbott, he’s “kicking back for a while”.
“It might change if there are changes to the racing up here,” he said.
“But there’s too many Rs and not enough C class races up here.
“It’s hard to train for owners.
“You have no option but to go to Newcastle on a Friday and down there you might get a lot of better class horses coming up from Sydney.
“Nine times out of 10 you cannot win.
“You waste 12 hours driving down and back, not to mention the cost.
“Plus, I want to spend more time with my family.
“They’re growing up and getting a bit older now where I want to enjoy it with them.
“It’s been a bit of a strain always being here with the horses.”
Tamworth Harness Racing Club races again on Thursday, October 25 (afternoon) while its annual awards night is being held at The Pub on Saturday, November 3.
