Having been named on Friday in Fiji's 12-man squad, stepping in for injured playmaker Vatemo Ravouvou, Hayne got his first slice of the action with four and a half minutes remaining in the second half of his side's opener against hosts England at Twickenham.

His first involvement was over before it started, as he bought a dummy on the left wing before the ball ultimately went to ground from Oliver Lindsay Hague.

He received the ball only once in his cameo, taking it on the Fiji line under the posts, before passing and wrapping around for the return from Samisoni Viriviri - which was intercepted for a try for Tom Bowen.

England ran out 31-10 winners over the reigning world champions, much to the delight of the home support.

In Fiji's second pool game, Hayne made an appearance with just shy of three and a half minutes on the clock in an emphatic 42-5 victory over Wales.

Running on with his side leading by 28 points, Hayne first act was a good step followed by a loose pass resulting in a turnover. Matters got worse in the following play, when Hayne hesitated over a dropped ball and stepped up out of the defensive line, resulting in a Wales try on his flank.

With the clock ticking down, there was still time for Hayne to make a tidy offload and a head-on tackle, but there was little to catch the eye of coach Ben Ryan.

A showdown against Australia loomed at the end of the first day's action - Fiji needed only to qualify for the quarter finals to secure back to back World Series Championships, as the England loss had potentially opened the door for South Africa to leapfrog them to the title.

But there was to be no early exit, as Fiji triumphed easily to the tune of 26 points to zero - Hayne coming into the match with just 12 seconds remaining in the second half, after the final try had been scored. Unfortunately for him, he still managed to give away a penalty in his brief cameo appearance.

Before that, old enemies England edged Australia 10-7 in a classic tussle in the other pool B game.

England flyer Dan Norton ran in after a great looped pass from Tom Mitchell to go in at the corner and take the lead with a couple of minutes remaining in the opening half, before Sam Figg touched down after the siren to give the Australians a 7-5 halftime lead.

Reduced to six men following a yellow card, Marcus Watson scored the decisive try in the final two minutes of the game and set Australia a tough task to get out of the group, with Fiji standing in their way.

Earlier, Australia kicked off their assault on the tournament with a comfortable 22-10 win over Wales.

Two tries from winger Henry Hutchison spearheaded the win with Sam Figg and Pama Fou also getting their names on the score sheet.

The men in gold started slowly but soon found their polish with some slick ball movement out to both wings.

Jesse Parahi set up Hutchison's first after two minutes following some clever work at the breakdown.

Hutchison scored on the same blade of grass late in the first half with the Aussies again successfully targeting Wales' right-hand side defence.

Australia put the game beyond reach through Figg in the second half, and Fou rounded out the scoring after latching onto a pinpoint cross-field kick.

A second-half double to Owen Jenkins kept things respectable for Wales.
