Locals as well as businesses and government agencies lost phones, both mobile and landline, as well as access to the internet when the Telstra network went down.
The Leader understands the outages also caused disruptions for local police and other government agencies, with computers down as well as all phone communications.
There were also reports one local bank lost all communication due to the service failure.
A Telstra spokesperson confirmed the outage was impacting Glen Innes and Tenterfield as well as Casino and Murwillumbah, while The Leader heard reports the outage stretched as far as Moree and Boggabilla.
"There is a transmission issue impacting some fixed line and ADSL services in areas," the spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"We have a technician on site investigating what has caused the disruption to services and we are working to restore them as soon as possible.
"We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused."
Telstra estimated the services would not be restored until sometime on Thursday.
