The three-year-old bay gelding was having his second start in a race after debuting for a nice second to Jonathan at Tamworth on Tamworth Cup day.
There was a neat historical link for Mason and winning jockey Robert Thompson as well.
“His mother (Monocular) won over 1600m for me too,” Mason said of the son of All American.
“And Robert won on her too.”
Eye On America is a tall, leggy type who has been working along well.
He had been working with playboy prince and keeping in touch with that talented galloper, leading Mason to believe he was a good chance yesterday.
The bookies agreed and sent him out a 2-1on ($1.50) favourite for him to beat the Mark Schmetzer-trained S’Wonderful by two lengths in the Corey’s Catering Maiden Handicap (1200m) and clocking a fair 1min 11.10secs.
“He’s still not all there yet,” Mason said of a maturing young horse.
“I think he’s going to be a handy little horse. We’ll look for a Class 1 1200m somewhere hopefully for him.”
Mason’s day turned sour later on in the day when Playboy Prince bled out of both nostrils.
