The gardeners created the impressive plot as the practical aspect of their Certificate II in Agriculture studies, combined with theory training to complete their qualification.
From there they will have hands-on skills to take to the work place or continue their studies to complete a Certificate III, according to Kristy Youman who instructs the 10 students involved, along with David Lockrey.
The team has tackled fencing building, plot design, propagation, irrigation and pest and disease control and are very pleased with the results.
Miss Youman said it’s been a collaborative effort with the students claiming ownership of the project and often coming in after hours to water, weed or just enjoy the fruits of their labour.
There’s also potential to extend the plot to incorporate an orchard, glass house and other more advanced gardening techniques. The project will integrate with the existing community garden also located on the campus, and local businesses have expressed an interest in receiving the fresh produce.
“The local businesses have been really supportive, and it’s a fantastic bunch of students,” Miss Youman said.
“This course will equip the students with the knowledge and confidence that they need to seek employment in the agricultural or horticultural industry.”
