TAMWORTH Public School won a North West cricket regional final at Scully Park yesterday, the Barry Everingham-coached side snaring a five wicket win over the Peter Mead-coached South Tamworth Public School.
South had batted first and made a respectable 4-128 in its 25 overs with the highlight being an unbroken half century stand by Logan Barnes (36no) and Tye Putney (37no).
A slow start – 3-38 after 13 overs at the first break – didn’t help South but Pat Hofman helped kick-start a second half revival featuring Barnes and Putney as they hammered more than 70 runs.
“Those final 12 overs they really smoked us,” Barry Everingham said.
“That put a cat amongst the pigeons and gave us a big score to chase.”
Jack Diebold (1-15) had bowled well early and hadn’t allowed a run off his bowling until the final ball of his fourth over.
James Wallace (2-13) also had success with his leg spinners and also took a screamer of a caught and bowled on his shoelaces.
Lachlan Barton also bowled well for Tamworth finishing with 0-17 from his five overs, a spell where South took 10 runs off his final over.
Zac and Harry Taylor also fielded well for Tamworth Public, each saving about a dozen runs, Everingham reckoned.
“That proved to be crucial in the end,” he said.
“Fielding was the difference in the end.”
Tamworth’s innings was in direct contrast to South’s.
It started brilliantly, scoring 2-115 off its first 13 overs despite losing a wicket in its first over and being 2-17 in its second.
Jack Diebold followed up his bowling effort with an unbeaten 40 (retired) and with AJ Pretorius (42 ret) put on a great third wicket partnership.
Logan Barnes followed his batting display with a good bowling effort to capture 2-22 while Putney also claimed 2-30.
South skipper Josh McCulloch also bowled well to finish with 0-19 from his four overs.
Everingham said his school now waits to see which school from the Hunter 1 division it plays in its round of 16 Brian Taber Shield game.
