Microchipping is not only a legal requirement, but helps reunite beloved pets with their worried owners.
Tamworth Regional Council runs two free microchipping days a year, with TAFE students meeting with the public, discussing responsible pet ownership with owners and doing the microchipping.
TAFE animal care section head teacher Christine McKinnon said the day not only allowed owners to get their pets microchipped for free, it also gave the students hands-on experience in dealing with the animals as well as dealing with the community and speaking to people about their pets.
“These students are work-ready students, which means they don’t have a work placement, so we are teaching these skills in-house,” she said.
These students will start the day by filling in paperwork with the pet owners and greeting the public as they arrive.
TAFE New England veterinary nursing and commercial microchip implantation students will do the microchipping under the supervision of TAFE vet teachers.
“Microchipping is part of learning about responsible pet ownership,” Ms McKinnon said.
“Apart from being a legislative requirement, microchipping is extremely important if your dog or cat goes missing, the chances of them coming home are greatly increased than an animal with no microchip.”
Owners do not need to make an appointment, they can show up to the pound tomorrow from 10am to 1pm.
“We only have 100 chips, so it’s first in, best dressed,” Ms McKinnon said.
