Carroll’s second win for the day also handed Kootingal trainer Craig Clegg a quinella in the Graham Moon Plumbing Pace (1609m) when Good Result beat stablemate The Muse by 1.8m.
Major Charlie is trained at Lochinvar by Graham Glover who also owns a share in the four-year-old gelding.
Carroll joked he was also able to “pry” a share in the horse out of Glover to make his win even more satisfying.
“It was a good performance,” Carroll said of the son of Major In Art.
“He had to do a bit of work.
“But we’ve also worked out how best to drive him his last couple of runs.
“That’s to drive him cold, stay quiet and come with a final run.
“We tried to catch them napping today.”
He did that, enabling the gelding to win by seven and a quarter metres and post a third career win at his 18th start.
Carroll then gave Great Result the perfect sit to win with the eight-year-old mare.
While reprimanded by stewards for causing some interference when he snagged his horse out from behind race leader Montana Baron, he was able to set the mare on the road to her sixth career win for Clegg.
The Kootingal trainer did favour The Muse and thought she might be too strong for her stablemate.
“She’s a tougher mare,” Clegg said.
“But the other one got a good sit and Nathan did give her the run of the race.
“The Muse had a tough run and when Nathan was able to get on her back the rest was history.”
The two mares are the only two Clegg has in work at the moment and he profited from the decision not to race at Inverell at last Sunday’s Cup meeting.
“I didn’t want to race the guts out of both of them,” he explained.
“Both will probably race at Tamworth , here in two weeks time,” he added.
The Tamworth Harness Racing Club races on Thursday, May 19 with $5100 Ladyship and Lordship Paces the feature races over 1980m.
Nominations for that meeting close at 9.30am next Friday (May 13).
