Rotary Club of Tamworth community service director John Nash said they had had good support from the community, although sales were down.

“We are down on last year because we are in the middle of a depression,” he said.

“We are making the books much cheaper than normal, so everyone can afford to buy books, and making sure we can recycle more books.”

Popular fiction authors including Danielle Steel rate highly among purchasers.

“Both fiction and non-fiction books have been popular among the buyers,” he said.

“We have quite a few children’s books and Golden Books galore, and we have a very large history section this year, which has been going really well. We had a massive donation from a history buff.”

Mr Nash said although the sale was well under way, organisers were still unloading books from the containers of donations and were still accepting donations, so there were new bargains to discover every day.

“We have taken a containerful of donations since we opened. There are stacks still coming out from the container, which is still half-full,” he said.

Sales from the event will help Rotary support community programs in the local area.

The Rotary Club of Tamworth donates to projects including a youth encouragement award at TAFE, Science and Engineering Challenge, Pride of Workmanship Awards, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Rotary Health, the Bicentennial Park Garden, Nazareth House Project, Breakfast Café at Tamworth High School, Bowelscan, Interact, St Jude’s School in Tanzania and polio eradication.

The sale will shut its doors at 4pm tomorrow.
