The local radio station will sponsor first division rugby league Cup competition when it kicks off in Armidale, Tamworth and Gunnedah tomorrow.
The Cup competition is the premier division in Group 4 rugby league, with teams from Narrabri, Gunnedah and Armidale joining Tamworth clubs West Lions, Oxley Diggers and North Tamworth to field four grades: ladies’ league tag, under 18s, reserve grade and first grade.
Group 4 president Mick Schmiedel was full of praise for 88.9fm’s commitment to supporting not only Group 4 Rugby League but all sport within the community through their popular Saturday morning sports show “It’s Game On”.
“It is great to see people and businesses keen to get on board and be a part of Group 4,” Schmiedel said.
“It is a big plus for us to get the extra cash and extra exposure in our competition.”
Having broadcast the past two Group 4 grand finals live from Jack Woolaston Oval, North Tamworth in 2014 and 2015, 88.9fm’s CEO George Frame is keen to consolidate a strong partnership with Group 4 Rugby League, as 88.fm Tamworth continues to grow from strength to strength within the Tamworth community and also throughout the New England and North West.
“The station is also going to do a Group 4 preview on Friday nights and a review on Mondays after the games,” Schmiedel said.
“We will try to look at all divisions but the 88.9FM Cup will be the focus.”
North Tamworth Bears are off to a flying start this season by winning the annual Wests Knockout and are keen for a threepeat but this year’s 88.9fm Cup competition will see strong opposition from the Oxley Diggers, Gunnedah Bulldogs, Narrabri Blues and a rejuvenated West Lions, whilst also welcoming the Armidale Rams to the Group 4 Cup competition.
Group 4’s 88.9fm Cup competition kicks off tomorrow with Gunnedah Bulldogs at home to Oxley Diggers, North Tamworth to play Narrabri whilst Armidale will play host to West Lions.
