The pair, who police said are from Victoria, were arrested in a paddock near Gurley after allegedly leading police on a pursuit for almost two hours in and around Narrabri and along the Newell Highway in a stolen car.
The 16-year-old alleged driver is charged with six offences, including receiving stolen property worth more than $15,000, police pursuit, special-range drink-driving, dishonestly obtaining property by deception and driving while unlicensed.
The 15-year-old girl is charged with three offences, including receiving stolen property and possessing a prohibited drug.
Both appeared in an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Moree Children’s Court yesterday morning, where they made no application for bail.
It was formally refused and the case was adjourned to a Sydney court.
The pair are accused of ramming a police car twice during the pursuit, using a Silver Nissan Pulsar reported stolen from Victoria on Wednesday.
The boy is also accused of failing to pay for fuel in Coonabarabran shortly before the chase.
“The driving was extremely dangerous, with total disregard for the safety of the police, the general community, their safety and property,” Barwon Detective Inspector David Silversides told The Leader, confirming road blocks on the highway were put in place to protect motorists.
“It was extremely important that the vehicle was stopped and those occupants detained.”
Detective Inspector Silversides has praised his officers for the way they carried out their duties.
One police car was damaged, but no officers were injured in the chase, and now investigators are calling for witnesses who might have seen the out-of-control car in the Narrabri township to come forward.
“Police would call for any dash- cam footage that may be available or any footage whether it be via phone, dash-cam or any other footage of that vehicle, if they could contact Narrabri or Moree police,” Detective Inspector Silversides said.
