A $1 million upgrade of stormwater systems in West Tamworth is now underway.
Work on site was originally meant to begin in August but was delayed because of rainfall.
The upgrade involves the trenching and installation of 1500mm diameter concrete pipes along the roadway.
The pipes are 2.6m long and weigh about four tonnes each.
More than 105 pipes will be installed in the first part of the upgrade, which is being funded through the stormwater levy paid for annually by ratepayers.
The pipes being replaced are much smaller than those being installed and have been there for quite some time according to council’s senior projects engineer, Bill Ash.
Mr Ash said the new system would be much more efficient.
It is anticipated Reserve Place will be closed for at least the next three weeks to allow heavy machinery to move in and around the site.
The full stormwater upgrade project is expected to take a number of months to complete.
