Hoses for 15 minutes during a two- hour period, if you’re a gardener.
Dear oh dear. It’s upsetting on a number of fronts, not the least of which is the prospect of Level 4 restrictions when the dam drops to 35 per cent – just another 2 per cent or so.
This is going to create a hue and cry, and so it should.
There’ll be those who will say, “So what! It doesn’t make any difference to me, I’m not much of a gardener anyway.”
There’s others who will shout out, “Wouldn’t you rather save the water for industry?” – and that means jobs.
Of course jobs are important, who would deny that, but there’s two sides to this coin.
If you are a gardener, or just a bit house proud, these are desperate times.
When you will be reduced to dipping into the laundry water, and bailing out the bath after the kids have finished just to save a bit of green. There’ll be other ideas out there too.
But it’s not just about the “green”, is it?
Any gardener will tell you, it’s a lifesaver. A way to keep physically and mentally fit, especially for the elderly.
It gets people out and about, when perhaps there’s few other reasons.
It’s also an investment. Do you know what it costs to set up a garden? Calculate that over a number of years and the figure can be quite astounding.
Funny thing is, the gardeners are often the most water conscious among us. Using mulch to keep the moisture in the soil, watering at the most optimum time of day.
Of course there are exceptions, as with everything, but on the whole, they are generally pretty conscious of what water they’re putting on their precious plants.
So before you condemn the gardeners among us for “getting us into this predicament”, think again.
And pray for rain, or at least a very big snowfall, to fill this new augmented dam of ours.
Because after all, we are all in this together!
