A meeting with the authority on Wednesday, April 13 decided to officially quash the store’s hopes of selling liquor at the new Armidale site.
ALDI had applied for a packaged liquor licence.
The decision coincided with the store’s grand opening in the city.
The Express asked the authority why the application was denied on Wednesday, however, no response was received by yesterday afternoon.
But in a published notice detailing the outcomes of the meeting, authority chief executive Micheil Brodie said “a statement of reasons will be provided and published as soon as practicable. It should be noted that this is a volume jurisdiction and a statement of reasons may take up to two months to produce.”
Original plans for the store included a 33-square-metre section dedicated to selling Aldi-branded alcohol.
Armidale Dumaresq Council’s Community Safety Committee opposed the application
Armidale’s store was not the only ALDI outlet to be denied the ability to sell packaged liquor, with the authority also declining a licence application for the Byron Bay shop.
That decision was also made during the April 13 meeting.
