Cassel, the BNSW high performance manager, and Everson the BNSW development and participation manager, actually ran two sessions in Tamworth, a Monday night “meet the coaches” night and yesterday morning’s session for the young children who might start in baseball this winter.
“It was a very good roll-up,” Cassel said of Monday night’s session.
“We had 18 senior coaches there. We talked about all things baseball, how to manage games and spoke about hitting, pitching, fielding.”
He said the session talked about managing junior sides and ensuring participation of all the juniors.
He also believes the juniors should have 30-ball pitching restrictions as well, something similar to cricket, so that all the juniors can have a chance of pitching.
Cassel has been in his job for a short few months and the trip to Tamworth is his first to country NSW.
“My first school holiday coaching session,” he said of yesterday’s class at the Field Of Dreams.
“We’ve started here in Tamworth and go to Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle and then home,” he said.
“It’s a good round trip to promote the game.”
He said baseball was a great sport to play as well as help improve skills applicable to other sports.
“It’s great for cricket – they can play and sharpen their fielding skills for cricket.
“In the past we had some great cricketers such as the Chappell brothers (Ian and Greg) and Allan Border play baseball in their off-season.
“I was lucky enough to play against them and I know they loved playing as well.”
