Both have three wins from three, the Nomads coming off a 109-point win over Tamworth Swans in Tamworth last Saturday and the Saints overcoming a slow start at Moree to beat the Suns by 60 at Ron Harbourne Oval.
Tamworth Roos registered their first win of the season with a five point win over Gunnedah Bulldogs in Gunnedah and join the Bulldogs and Narrabri Eagles in equal third.
Moree Suns and Tamworth are winless at the bottom after the Swans gave the Nomads a bit of competition in the first half of Saturday’s 109-point loss and the Suns led Inverell by a point at the end of the first quarter.
It was the kick in the backside the Saints needed, club president Dick Gleeson said.
He had coached the Saints the week before in their win over the Roos in Tamworth but took a back seat to Michael Gould and Chris Whitton on Saturday as the Saints continue a “rotation policy” with their coaching.
The aim is to give a few people a taste of coaching-leading the Saints with a view to finding the best full-time coach, Gleeson said.
“The Suns have some pretty handy players.
“They’ll be hard enough to beat out there.
“They caught us napping a little,” Gleeson said.
“ We didn’t expect them to be that good and led us by a point at quarter- time.
“It was a bit of a shock for us. No one will be able to take them lightly out there.”
The Saints had also gone to Moree missing “all our on-ballers” and were disorganised to start with before settling better in the final three quarters.
Kieran Te Velde, Gould, Chris Pay and Damien Harrison were best for the Saints, who have this weekend off (Anzac bye weekend) before playing Narrabri Eagles at home on April 30.
The Moree Suns were good early against the Saints, with Mathew Lather finishing with five goals.
Lather, Max Bienke, Zach Collier, Ross Parsons, Jayme Demster and Luke O’Neil were best for the Suns who now head to Tamworth to play the Kangaroos on April 30 while Gunnedah Bulldogs host the New England Nomads at Wolseley Park.
