Only 3 per cent of Tamworth residents roll up their sleeves to make lifesaving blood donations, yet one in three will need it in their lifetime and the council has thrown down the challenge for other organisations.

“With our workforce, we are one of the biggest employers in the region,” TRC communications and engagement manager Caroline Lumley said.

“Employees get credited if their family comes in as well. We do have quite a number of staff who have already registered.”

Tamworth mayor Col Murray is a regular donor, and even though he’s had Q fever previously he can still donate plasma, and encouraged others to take his lead.

“Be it road trauma, a cancer diagnosis, or blood loss during childbirth, the figures say it all: 200 blood donations every week in Tamworth save thousands of lives,” he said.

“That’s why we’re working with the blood service to attract an additional 151 new blood donors over three months throughout the Tamworth region, and encouraging our employees to donate blood.” 

The council’s “Blood Challenge” is set to ignite healthy competition, with more than 60 councils from NSW competing for the highest number of donations between April 1 and June 30.

“Bleed for Tamworth by registering your donation with Tamworth council’s Red25 donation group at donateblood.com.au,” blood service spokeswoman Annie Curtis said.

“Chances are, it could be a neighbour, a workmate, or a loved one who needs it.”
