Fire damage at Tamworth's Riverside

TAMWORTH Regional Council will face a repair bill of between $3000 and $5000 after a fire caused structural damage to the Plain St amenities building at the Riverside Sporting Complex early Saturday morning.

Tamworth Regional Council’s manager of parks and horticulture, Brian Sheedy, said vandals had set fire to seven wheelie bins chained to one of the building’s concrete pillars at about 4am on Saturday.

“There was extensive smoke and soot damage to the outside wall of the upper floor, electrical wiring was burnt out and structural damage was caused to the concrete pillar when it exploded due to the heat,” he said.

It is understood an engineer has been called to inspect the building and identify the extent of the repair work that will need to be undertaken.
