The Dick Gleeson-coached Saints beat the Tamworth Swans in Inverell by 56 points in the first round and travelled down to Tamworth on Saturday to beat the Tamworth Kangaroos by 13 points after booting 11.19 85 to the Roos 9.18 72.
It kept them at the top of the TAFL table on a weekend where Narrabri Eagles had a 12 point win over the Swans in Narrabri and the New England Nomads thumped Moree Suns 40.27 267 to 1.3 9 in Armidale.
Out at Narrabri the Eagles swooped early setting up their seven-pint win with a five -goal first term and a 19 point lead at the first break.
The Swans replied with a four-goal second term to get within three points but that was as close as they got, the Eagles hanging on to kick 8.7 55 to the Swans’ 6.7 43.
At Bellevue Oval, The Nomads kicked six goals in the first term, eight in the second and 13 apiece in the final two halves with Jed Ellis-Cluff booting 10 goals, Dave Richards seven and Cameron Graham five.
Ellis-Cluff, Richards and Graham were amongst the best Nomads along with Christopher Roe and James Treweeke.
Zach Collier booted the Suns’ lone goal in the final quarter and with Robert Kemp, Daniel Kearney, Fraser Brown, Tim Tesoreiro and Duane Macey was best for the visitors.
In Tamworth, it was the Saints who finished the stronger against a Roos side missing the likes of Daniel Johnson and Luke Robinson for a number of weeks yet.
The Saints were also missing a few too, said coach Dick Gleeson.
“We had nine pull out on Friday night,” he said.
“We were scraping the bottom of the barrel but the boys who came in did a great job. We had five boys playing just their second game of AFL today.”
Injured Roos stars Daniel Johnson, said the Roos had suffered from lack of pre-season games.
“We blew the cobwebs out today.
“Had a few players out and struggled with pre-season numbers. We had to struggle to put the 22 on the field today.”
Drew Murden, Daniel Leon and Brad Rees were three of the Roo stars and Justin Hathway “came out of the woodwork” to reprise some old memories.
Sam Kimmince, Tyler Desborough, Michael Gould, Darren Pithers, Kieran Te Velde and Thomas Williams were standouts for the Saints.
