THE Peel Valley Venturer Scouts are calling out for new members as they travel to the Barrington Tops this weekend for a whitewater rafting and camping trip.
Venturer Scout leader Martin Siddons said the Venturer Scouts was a mixture of fun, adventure and a personal challenge that also provided recognised training in outdoor recreation.
“Scouts learn how to tie knots, we throw them off a cliff to see how good the knots are,” Martin said.
The Tamworth Venturer Scouts is composed of members from Tamworth Oxley, Tamworth Hillvue, and Werris Creek Scout troupes.
The unit is for 14- to 18-year-olds who meet once a week and try to get involved in activities two weekends a month. This year they have been abseiling, whitewater rafting and undergone advanced bushwalking.
Martin said members don’t have to come through the scout ranks to get involved, but can join at any time. At the moment there are 10 members in the group, but they are looking for more, as “the more people, the bigger the adventure.”
