Not only are world champions such as Steve Glasson and Shane Garvey turning out for the NSW Institute of Sport team but South African champion Neil Burkett is also listed to play in a Merrylands team also including state and national champions Ray Pearse and Tom Ellem.
David Ferguson, well known for his exploits at Tamworth City during its Easter Singles and Pairs, will skip a four including Burkett, organiser Phil Johnson said.
“We are putting this on at great expense to the club so we’re hoping to get a good crowd in to watch,” Johnson said this week.
“There’s some great players, world champions, amongst these players. So it’s a great investment by the club.
“We just hope to get a few people in to see these fine players.
“It’s not often you get to see world champions of any description in Tamworth.”
While there are some highly credentialled players such as Glasson, Garvey and Burkett involved, there are also some extremely talented young players, especially in the NSWIS team.
There is also plenty of local interest, with former South Tamworth junior Hudson O’Sullivan and Armidale City’s Justin Bullen playing for NSWIS.
There are also three females – Sarah Boddington, Anne Johns and Kenita Monks – in the NSWIS side.
“They are young too,” Johnson added.
“Matthew Baus (who skips one of the NSWIS 4s) is only a young guy and a former state singles winner,” Johnson said.
“Jono Davis is from Dubbo Railway, plays No 1 pennants for them and was a runner up in the state junior singles.
“Then there’s Zelko Trbara (Merrylands) – he’s in the State Under 15 squad too.
“It all starts at 6pm and everyone is invited to have a look.”
Glasson also has more than just the Champions League on his mind in Tamworth.
He’s also running a NIAS bowls clinic tomorrow morning.
“That starts at 9.30am and runs through to 11am,” Johnson said.
“He’s then staying on for Sween’s Members’ Day.
“That should be a lot of fun.”
Sween’s Members’ Day is South Tamworth president Scott Sweeney’s president’s day, remodelled and styled to be a more up to date celebration of the club’s year.
Judging by the promotional flyers produced by the club with the flattering picture of its president, it certainly looks like being a fun day.
