Mitch King took home the title of busking champion during the festival, over nine other competitors on the final weekend of the event.
It was his first time competing as a busker in Tamworth and he took home the $2000 first prize.
His one-man band app-roach to busking and his talents on all his chosen instruments won over the judges, and he’ll be bringing his take on music to The Longyard on Sunday, March 20 from 3pm.
King is known for his unique performances, which showcase his ability to simultaneously blend vocals with the electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, kick drum and tambourine to create his Australian folky blues and roots sound.
In his short time as a professional musician he has not only performed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, but also at Blues on Broadbeach, Byron Bay Bluesfest, the Gympie Music Muster and appeared on breakfast television show, Sunrise.
The singer-songwriter-musician’s recognition and profile is steadily growing, supporting artists such as Ash Grunwald, Rick Price and Dallas Frasca.
“This is my first time back in Tamworth since the festival and I’ve been playing through Victoria and South Australia doing festivals, a bit of busking and playing a few venues,” King said.
At the St Kilda Festival, the 22-year-old Queenslander was named the Hottest New Act, He said that, and the busking championship win, had created more momentum for his music.
“People are pretty excited to see me now,” he said.
“It all helps the cause. More people are going to know my music.”
The St Kilda Festival win means he will play the main stage at next year’s event.
Following his Tamworth show next weekend, he’s spending a couple of months playing the Gold Coast and surrounding areas before he heads out on tour once again.
King said he also planned to put some tracks down.
“I’m really hoping to record soon,” he said.
“I’m trying to get together a lot of material and will hopefully start recording within the next three or four months.”
He’s been playing music since his school days, with influences including Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Kim Churchill and John Butler.
