BOB Hennessy finally got his hands on the trophy named in honour of his late father Phil yesterday.
Hennessy teamed up with Ron Barnett to win the West Tamworth Club’s annual Phil Hennessy Over 55s Open Event.
Yesterday was the sixth year of the event and saw 22 teams battle it out from the various clubs around Tamworth, Murrurundi, Willow Tree, Quirindi, Werris Creek and Kootingal.
Hennessy said it was pretty special to finally win it.
“I was very pleased. I’ve been trying to do it all these years,” he said.
Last year he and Barnett, who won it three years ago with father-in-law Trevor Sevil, came close.
They finished runners-up but were only beaten on a countback.
He said the day keeps on getting bigger each year and this year they had a major sponsor come on board in Peel Valley Turf.
The victors led a West Tamworth trifecta, with the first three combinations from the host club.
Hennessy and Barnett won by two shots, finishing with three wins +20 for the day.
Joe Pizzutti and David Peak were second on three wins +18 and Owen McMahon and Brian McLean third with three wins +9.
There were also prizes awarded to the best performed in each round.
For the first round of games it was West Tamworth’s Terry Kelly and Buck Rogers for their 14-shot win.
The second game winners were Quirindi’s Jim McLuand and Jerry Walsh with a margin of +11 and in the final game Tamworth City’s Ces Wales and Greg Roese after they won their game by 16 shots.
The day was also a chance for the West Tamworth contingent to show off their new playing shirts.
The club recently revamped the design after more than a decade.
The new shirts have coloured blue sleeves with black stars on them and blue shaded into a white body.
The old shirts were white with blue stripes across the shoulders and sleeves.
