THE mystery of missing Boggabri man Peter Riordan has ended in tragedy, with the discovery of his body yesterday.
Police recovered the body of the 72-year-old in the Namoi River after his silver Toyota LandCruiser was found submerged in the water at an isolated fishing spot about 20km north of Boggabri. The search for Mr Riordan had revealed track marks leading into the water at the site on Tuesday.
Mr Riordan was last seen about 3.30pm last Friday when he returned to his home at Boggabri Caravan Park after attending a friend’s funeral, telling people he planned on going fishing.
That night a storm hit the area with falls of 14mm. He was reported missing on Sunday.
Friends said the disappearance of Mr Riordan was out of character, and he would usually tell his neighbours and take his camping trailer if he were to stay away overnight.
Mr Riordan’s mate, Trevor Donnelly, described him as a man who was keen on fishing, enjoyed a beer, and was loved by those who knew him.
He also liked to indulge in the odd dance at the local bowling club on occasion.
“He was a wonderful old bloke, a happy-go-lucky person,” Mr Donnelly said.
Mr Donnelly said he’d known Mr Riordan for several years, ever since he moved to Boggabri from Gunnedah. “I’ll miss the old fella,” he said.
Brian Fuller had lived next to him at the caravan park for about two and a half years. “Just a good old bloke, and he’s been a good neighbour over the years he’s lived next door,” Mr Fuller said.
Investigations into Mr Riordan’s death continue and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
