I AM heartened by the backlash to Alan Jones’ latest outrage.
Wouldn’t it be great if this episode resulted in finally having his poisonous opinions taken off the airways? Is he a part owner of 2GB? Ratings are expected to be higher than ever.
This latest controversy is tipped to blow over in another month. So then it will it be back to business as usual?
Jones is literally inciting hatred – and if he was a Muslim for example, I’d bet his freedom of speech would be quickly curtailed.
Even if you don’t listen to his show, non-followers are still assaulted by his comments. The problem is his most inflammatory comments are frequently re-reported as news in mainstream media.
The old dog knows any publicity is good publicity. And because he is rich and powerful, the politicians eat out of his pocket.
Money talks and unfortunately, just like Jones, it talks far too crassly, too often and without compassion.
However, wouldn’t it be good if this current backlash was a sign of a turning tide in political debate, an era where balance, intelligent and informed discussion is valued over ignorance, dirty talk and petty drama?
Are the days of the “Ugly Australian” numbered? If you must tune into 2GB, tell them to raise the tone.
