The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Armidale Local Court yesterday facing three charges after her arrest on Saturday morning in Short St, Glen Innes.
The 42-year-old, along with the teenager, were arrested after two alleged altercations broke out in the neighbourhood about 6.30am on Saturday. New England Chief Inspector Rowan O’Brien told The Leader police were patrolling the street when they “heard yelling and screaming”.
“Officers located two females fighting in the front yard of a premises and a male close by armed with a stick,” he said.
“When confronted by police the male [allegedly] refused to put the stick down and OC spray was deployed. OC spray was also used to separate the two females.”
During the arrest, police noticed a further disturbance in the next door property and went to investigate.
“[They] sighted another male armed with a stick and a further male [allegedly] armed with a knife and a pair of scissors,” Chief Inspector O’Brien said.
“The man [allegedly] armed with the knife and scissors when confronted by police dropped the items and decamped from the scene.”
“A taser was also drawn during the incident to disarm the 15-year-old youth with a knife and scissors but it was not deployed.”
Paramedics had to be called for decontamination and a man and a woman were taken to Glen Innes hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The 15-year-old boy and 42-year-old woman were taken to Glen Innes Police Station where they were charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault.
Police will allege in court the juvenile assaulted a man at the scene, slashing him in the ear.
Both were refused bail in an out-of-sessions hearing in Armidale Local Court on Sunday morning before the woman lodged another application in court again yesterday.
But she was denied release by magistrate Karen Stafford who said there was an unacceptable risk she would endanger the safety of victims, individuals and the community.
She pleaded not guilty to the three charges and will remain in custody until the case heads back to court in March, while the 15-year-old boy will appear in court again this week.
Chief Inspector O’Brien said more arrests were expected.
“Further inquiries are being conducted and it is expected further charges will be laid and offenders identified,” he said.
