I WRITE in support of the sentiments expressed by Walcha resident Don Murchie regarding the forced amalgamation of Walcha Council with Tamworth Regional Council (The NDL, Tuesday, February 2).

Walcha Council has been an extraordinary example of what local government should be and proof of this can be seen in the support that comes from the community every time their autonomy is threatened.
In my 22 years in parliament, I can honestly say that, irrespective of who the councillors were, Walcha was ahead of the pack.
Walcha deserves the support of all of us.
Could I suggest that, to assist Walcha, Tamworth Regional Council refuses to accept the government’s directive to devour Walcha.
In other words, stand up for your neighbour.
If our political representatives are so weak that they can’t influence this process, perhaps our councils should stand by one another.
The same logic should apply to Guyra Shire Council.
If Armidale is ambivalent about a merger and Guyra is opposed, pull the politicians on and refuse to accept the recommendations.
In my view, and with some knowledge of the process at the time, Guyra would not have the world-class tomato glasshouse complex, which employs hundreds of residents, if it had been part of a larger council.
Come on, Kevin and Adam, you can do better than this.
There is no political downside in standing up for your communities. Fight for their future.
