For years the school handed out bottled water to its boarding students every day of the school term – more than 200 bottles a day.
While the school did their best to recycle the bottles, it wanted to do better.
Head of secondary girls Judy Taylor and the Enviro Club were pushed to replace the daily bottled water with reusable drink bottles and access to chilled filtered water.
“Reducing waste has been an ongoing passion of mine, so I was only too happy to help the girls get their idea off the ground and into Calrossy,” Mrs Taylor said.
Five filtered water stations have been installed across the Brisbane St campus and each girl received a reusable water bottle, with each year group getting a different colour.
The idea will also be rolled out across the boys and primary schools, with one station already installed.
Year 12 student and Enviro Club member Eliza Draper said the school’s teachers, staff, parents and visitors could also use the refill stations.
“We used to collect the bottles and show them at assemblies to try and encourage more recycling, but lots of the bottles were still going to landfill,” Eliza said.
