The retired schoolteacher had a big cricket win in Newcastle last Thursday when the Central North Zone’s (CNZ) Under 16 side won the Bradman Cup Country Under 16 Championship with a three wicket win over Southern Zone.
Browne was an assistant coach to Gunnedah’s head coach Kel Walls after the previous week coaching the CNZ’s Under 14 side to third in the Kookaburra Cup Country Under 14 Championships in Griffith.
A former NSW Country wicketkeeping-batsman, his knowledge and experience has been a major factor in the success of the CNZ sides.
CNZ’s Bradman Cup win in Newcastle also won CNZ the Hogg Silver for the top country zone and Bradman Cup coach Kel Walls said it was a “great team effort from the Bradman boys”.
“We’ve been building this team from the U14s when we just missed out on the final,” Walls said.
Browne has been influential and was also coach of the CNZ Under 19s who won their Country Championship earlier this season in Dubbo.
He was also the Northern Bolters T20 coach. They made it all the way to the SCG and a loss in the final.
Browne is also the South Tamworth Cricket Club president and selector as well as being the Emus secretary.
The Northern NSW Under 21 Emus completed their recent tour of NZ losing just one game. They won the Boomerang Cup Test under the steady coaching influence of former Sheffield Star batsman Peter Clifford and manager Warwick Glaves.
However cricket hasn’t been Browne’s only major concern.
He drove back from the Bradman Cup side’s easy win over Central Coast last Wednesday to help run the big Pub Group Gold Nugget meeting at Tamworth.
As chairman of the Tamworth Harness Racing Club, he is the chief of a club ever evolving in a major racing and pacing market.
Tamworth conducted nine races on that Wednesday Gold Nugget night and backed up with 11 races, including seven Golden Guitar heats, last Sunday.
He also thought the 200-plus nominations for the Golden Guitar heats meeting might have been a record for Harness Racing NSW.
Regardless of that, he’s delighted to see the influx of horses and new stables.
“The carnival is growing,” he said.
“To have seven heats of the Golden Guitar is amazing.
“All the big stables are here. and we have some good quality horses. It’s good to see we had two heats of the Nevele R Stud Starmaker 3YO as well.”
Tonight’s Golden Guitar Final meeting starts at 6.37pm with the three main races, the Garrard’s Horse and House Tamworth City Cup at 8.10pm, the Pryde’s EasiFeed Golden Guitar Final at 9.10pm and the Neverle R Stud Starmaker 3YO Final at 10.10pm.
