SEVENTEEN properties across the Tamworth region will share in $42,000 from the Tamworth Regional Heritage Assistance Fund 2012/2013.
Tamworth councillors, at Tuesday night’s ordinary meeting, endorsed a report which recommended offers of assistance ranging in amounts from $650 to $8500 for painting and/or repairs to heritage buildings in Tamworth, Nundle, Piallamore, Manilla and Barraba.
They include private homes, commercial properties and community buildings.
The largest offer of assistance of $8500 will be for work on a building described in a report tabled at Tuesday night’s meeting as being of “considerable importance to the commercial precinct of Manilla”.
The owners of 195 Manilla St, Manilla – the premises of Manilla Meats – are proposing to spend $49,000 to reinstate the two-storey bullnose verandah which was originally part of the building.
The second-largest single amount offered through the fund is $7500 to Tamworth Community College in Peel St, Tamworth, for repair and restoration of brickwork, including the treatment of rising damp. The work has been costed at $35,545.
The college’s premises are the former Munro’s Mill built in the 1860s which is considered “significant as an old industrial structure”.
The $42,000 total of the 2012/2013 fund comprises a NSW Heritage Office grant of $12,000 and $30,000 from Tamworth Regional Council.
Council’s heritage advisor reviewed and assessed each application and provided council with recommendations in relation to each proposal.
