End of the line for the Charter boys

CHARTER Freightlines staff members had their last hurrah yesterday with the company closing after 45 years on the road.

The truck drivers had a barbecue to mark the final day of the company in Tamworth, with everyone re-employed with Carey’s Freight Lines.

The company employed four permanent drivers, two casuals and a manager in Tamworth.

“It is a sad time because it’s a shame to see the company fold up,” manager Darryl Collister said.

Mr Collister, a driver of 20 years, said he’d been the manager with Charter Freightlines for nine years and had good memories of the company.

“I’ve worked with a great bunch of blokes,” he said.

“You couldn’t wish for a better bunch of drivers and it’s a great bunch of customers who were always understanding of any little problems.”

The employees will start work with Carey’s on Monday and Tuesday.

The employees and a small number of customers gathered at the depot yesterday to farewell the company with a barbecue and refreshments.
