He bats, bowls and will skipper the Central Northern Zone Under 16 side when it plays in this week’s Bradman Cup Country Under 16 Championship in Newcastle.
He and his teenage team-mates are excited to be heading to such a prestigious tournament.
Just to be picked is an honour, to be the CNZ skipper is special, Paterson told The Leader.
“It is a real honour to be captain of the zone,” Paterson said.
“It’s pretty big really.”
He was the skipper of the Tamworth Under 16 side when it travelled to Taree last week only to have the Stan Austin Shield Under 16 Carnival washed out.
It would have been a good week of cricket, especially for Paterson, Tyson Rennie and Narrabri wicketkeeper Coby Cornish.
They now link with Moree’s Paddy Montgomery and Inverell’s Jaiden Tasker in a CNZ side also containing seven Hunter Valley players, including Muswellbrook allrounder Caleb McNeill, who plays his cricket in Tamworth with the South Tamworth club.
McNeill will also be Paterson lieutenant in Newcastle
“He’ll be our third seamer and bat in the middle order,” Paterson said of the gifted younger brother of quick Angus McNeill.
Moree’s Paddy Montgomery and Inverell’s Jaiden Tasker will open the bowling, Jye said.
“Both are very good opening bowlers,” he said.
“Both are quick and swing the ball too.”
Montgomery’s right arm thunderbolts and Tasker’s left arm pace were also part of the CNZ’s Bradman Cup campaign in Singleton and Maitland last year.
In fact Paterson, Rennie, McNeill and Cornish also played in that tournament, so they know what to expect when they start today.
“Our first game was washed out, we had an easy win in the second game but got beaten by Newcastle in our third game,” Paterson recalled.
“Hopefully we’ll go better this year,” he said.
Jye is also hoping to score runs at the top of the order as well as bowl some good overs of off-spin as well.
While he missed a week of cricket at Taree he did have Thursday and Friday night’s T20 rounds to have some centre wicket practice as well as open the batting for Bective-East’s first grade side against Old Boys on Saturday.
He scored four and five for McDonald’s on Thursday and Friday evenings as well as 13 for Bective-East in Saturday’s win over competition leading Old Boys.
The 16-year-old Year 11 student at McCarthy Catholic High is in his second season of first grade with the Bulls.
“It’s a good challenge,” he said.
“Playing Old Boys (competition leaders) will be a good test.”
He opened the batting Saturday and scored 13 from 19 deliveries for the Bulls in their 72-run win over defending premiers Old Boys.
Rennie also played for Bective and hit 16 from 15 balls, including one big six in the 40 over-a-side game.
Central North Zone plays North Coastal in their first round match at Charlestown Oval today while Newcastle and Central Coast match up at JR Ron Hill Oval in the other Pool 1 match. Southern/ACT and Illawarra play off at Learmonth Park in their Pool 2 clash with Riverina and Western matched up at Cardiff No 1 Oval.
