THE New England Highway was reopened near Bluff Rock between Tenterfield and Glen Innes yesterday after a bushfire closed it to all traffic for a brief period.
The grass fire, about 13km south of Tenterfield, broke out in the area about 3pm. Emergency services and Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) crews were on the scene and turning motorists around in both directions.
The highway was closed for about an hour but was reopened after the fire was brought under control.
The RMS is warning motorists to exercise extreme caution in the area.
