Tamworth Tennis camps are a racquet kids love

A RECORD number of children have chosen tennis as their activity of choice this holidays.

Tamworth Tennis Club at Treloar Park has all but been invaded by children aged between four years  old and their mid-teens since Monday for the holiday  tennis camp.

Club tennis professional Jarrod Campbell said the 112 children participating in the camp this week was the largest number of participants he had signed on for a tennis camp since he started them 11 years ago.

“It’s a huge number,” Mr Campbell said.

The weather and an increasing number of parents seeking to find fun, organised, outdoor activities to keep holiday boredom at bay are the likely reason for such a huge response according to  Mr  Campbell.

“The camps are always popular but at this time of year there tends to be a big response. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact it’s springtime,” he said.

The camp began on Monday and will conclude tomorrow.

Tomorrow world famous sports stars will take to the courts when the children come dressed as their favourite sportingpersonality.

“The dress-up day is always a huge hit,” Mr Campbell said.

Next week another 80 or so children have signed up for the camp,  taking to the courts from Tuesday to Friday.

Mr Campbell said often holiday camps were a breeding ground for tennis world’s next big thing.

“A lot of the juniors we have that are doing really well, and even the more senior state representatives, got their start having some fun and honing their skills at holiday camps,” he said.

“They are a great way to have fun and learn the game.”
