The Leader reader, and devoted animal lover, Brian Gregson of Tamworth, would love to have the community’s support to establish a new animal refuge for the city.
I AM writing with regard to re-establishing an animal refuge in our area. As many would know, Jean Medlock, who did a sterling job for years helping to rehome and look after animals, has retired, sold her property, leaving a massive vacuum to fill.
I have known Jean for a long time and she deserves a long rest, as many people would attest to. She has brought much joy to folk needing an animal companion and I am sure most people are so grateful to her.
I am calling for public support to help us get some type of refuge set up – but one of the biggest stumbling blocks is a venue.
A suitable place in an area away from dense residential is essential, and such a venue needs to comply with council regulations. Perhaps someone has an unused building on acres not far from Tamworth that we can use.
I should stress should we animal lovers get this refuge going, there is nothing in it for us, except to see animals looked after and rehomed to caring people.
I have also called on the support of the RSPCA and it has expressed its concern and interest in helping care for animals. It already has a group of caring individuals who look after many types of animals and much of their work goes unnoticed.
Should we get the refuge going, we will need an army of volunteers to help out. Unfortunately, Jean did most of the work herself, although at some times, caring folk were there to lend a helping hand.
I got my little dog, Benny, from Jean and I’m forever grateful, as are many people who have taken on the responsiblity of animal care, with a cat or dog from Jean’s refuge.
I wish Jean all the best. She deserves all the accolades and I only hope, we can carry on her good work. If you have good suggestions or can help with this great cause, please contact me on 0423 403 529.
