Andrew George Pegley has been behind bars since he was arrested during a police operation on a property off Old Grafton Rd at Diehard on September 2.

Pegley is yet to enter formal pleas to his six charges but submitted a signed waiver of committal in Armidale Local Court, electing instead to head straight to trial.

Solicitor Clive Sharkey said his client had received the brief of evidence and would challenge several of the offences in the district court.

Solicitor for the Director of Public Prosecutions Ben Barrack told the court Pegley would be committed for trial on charges of firing a firearm at house with disregard for safety, discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and supplying more than an indictable amount of cannabis.

Three other offences of firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure persons or property, possessing ammunition without a licence and possessing a prohibited drug will also follow on a certificate as backup charges in the district court.

Police allege the 35-year-old fired a number of shots at a home after 11pm on September 1 and 7.20am the next day, before police were called to the Wytalibah property.

Pegley was allegedly armed with a rifle when officers arrived, and held police at bay for several hours, sparking a siege.

Extra police and negotiators were called to back up local officers on the ground, who cordoned off the area and moved nearby residents to a command post.

Following an eight-hour operation, Pegley surrendered and was arrested by police.

Magistrate Karen Stafford formally committed Pegley, who appeared in court via video link from prison, for trial in the district court, with a date for the case expected towards the end of next year.

Pegley has flagged a number of attempts to apply for bail in previous court appearances, but declined to lodge a formal application during the brief proceedings.

He will remain in custody until a trial date is selected.
