Tamworth’s Cate Rae has asked businesses to be mindful of disabled patrons to ensure they can enjoy a meal out as much as anyone else.
Ms Rae is currently visiting eateries in Tamworth to check out their disabled-friendly access and amenities.
Her project is a part of My Choice Matters, a consumer development program set up by the NSW government to support people with disabilities and their families in preparation for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Ms Rae, who uses a wheelchair, said the research also covers premises’ suitability for visits from a wide spectrum of disabled patrons.
“What do they do if someone is blind? Are they able to help that person when they visit?” Ms Rae said.
She said her needs were more obvious to businesses but other disabilities were not so apparent.
Also conducting research in Tamworth is Tony Hawkins, who is also a wheelchair-user and is blind.
Mr Hawkins is offering to translate menus into Braille to help businesses serve all sectors of the community.
Ms Rae said services had improved but said greater awareness was still needed.
Ms Rae urged businesses to have a “plan of attack” for guests with disabilities to make everyone’s life easier.
Something simple like having a pen and paper ready to simplify communication with deaf diners was one example she gave.
Ms Rae said city businesses were possibly more prepared and accessible, due mainly to a higher population. However, Tamworth led the way for disabled access in rural communities and the region’s large tourist market was a reason for high standards.
Open communication was the key tool for progress, according to Ms Rae.
“Just ask, ‘Can I help you?’ or ‘Can I do anything?’” she said.
Ms Rae said she didn’t like asking for help but admitted there were times she needed assistance.
The pair’s findings will be presented to invited guests at Wests’ Diggers Club next Monday.
