About 7.45am, the 77-year-old was walking along the footpath on Peel St out the front of the BP Service Station when she was struck by a utility, which turned left into the driveway of the servo.
The force of the accidental collision knocked the woman to the ground and she suffered a serious arm injury.
The occupants of the vehicle and bystanders rushed to help the woman, before ambulance and police were called.
Paramedics treated the woman for the injury to her right arm and a spokesperson for Ambulance NSW confirmed the woman was transported from the scene in a stable condition with serious injuries.
She was taken to Tamworth hospital but was expected to be transferred to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle yesterday afternoon for specialist treatment.
Police said the 36-year-old driver was breath-tested at the scene as a precaution and returned a negative result, and was also taken to hospital for treatment for shock.
The scene was cordoned off and photographed by investigators but was cleared within an hour.
The vehicle sustained minor damage to the front and was driven from the scene.
Investigations into the accident are continuing.
