FASHION and the environment don’t often go hand-in-hand, but the 2012 Lifeline Spring Fashion Show promises to be “One of a Kind”.
Following the success of last year’s event, Lifeline’s Emily Honess decided to incorporate a green factor for this year’s show to raise awareness of the environmental issues surrounding the clothing industry.
“A lot of unwanted clothing ends up in landfill. This is a way to get students thinking about what happens to household items, particularly clothing, when we are finished with them,” Emily said.
Visual Arts teacher Bryanna Pearl from Peel High School said that her students are looking forward to seeing their “wearable art” outfits take the stage for the October 27 show.
Five outfits from her Year 9 students will go on show, including a dress made entirely from old newspapers, called “Paper Doll”.
“It’s about raising their consciousness and encouraging sustainable fashion,” Bryanna said.
“My students and I are looking forward to collaborating with Emily for the show.”
Designed to show off the best of the vintage and recycled fashions from the Tamworth Lifeline store, Emily said no matter what kind of fashion you dig, there will be something for everyone.
Tamworth designers Lynda Ann and Villi Villette will also include collections for the event, with a buzz element – up-cycling – the main focus.
“Up-cycling is changing or adding embellishment to a second-hand item into something new and fresh,” Emily said.
“It adds a great one-off feel to a garment, perfect for those who like a more eclectic style.”
Real-life models will add to the atmosphere this year, with the motto of “all ages and all sizes”.
“Different looks work on different sizes, and this year they’ll be from size 6 to 20 on stage,” Emily said.
Organisers have lengthened the runway and included extra seating this year, with the first 100 guests through the door receiving a fashion gift pack.
See something you like on the runway? You can wear it home says Emily, with markets enabling the quickest wallets in town to snap up their favourite outfits.
The 2012 Lifeline One of a Kind Fashion Show is on at the Longyard Hotel on October 27.
