NEMINGHA Public School’s girls’ open cricket side will have to produce their best form in order to hold the Lord Taverner’s Shield aloft in Maitland today.

The open girls’ cricket team will line up against a strong South Wagga Wagga Public School in the semi-final of the NSW PSSA knockout competition.
If they are victorious, they will have to back up again that afternoon in the final.
The games are 25 overs, therefore producing a large amount of exciting stroke play.
The girls’ cricket program at Nemingha started four years ago and the school now believes it is seeing the rewards through the amount of interest and talent that has been nurtured.
Last season, Nemingha went extremely close to winning the State PSSA Girls’ Cricket Knockout, losing in the final to Newport Public School.
They will be aiming to go one better with a very well-rounded team skippered by Isabella Cameron and coached by her father Joe Cameron, Nemingha principal David Lewis said.
“Isabella hasn’t been dismissed this year, which is an amazing effort,” he said.
She has scored 42no, 43no and 26no in her last three innings.”
The team will consist of three North West players including Cameron, Deni Baker and Brianna Elliot who performed very well at the recent PSSA championships.
“Bree has also been very good this season,” Lewis said.
“She has been a consistent wicket-taker and is hard to get away.”
Nemingha have played five Lords Taverners Shield KO games so far this season, including a long drive to Mullumbimby for one match.
“The team has been training every Tuesday since February and had a little break during the winter months,” Lewis said of their training schedule.
Some of the girls develop their skills even more on a Saturday morning where they play with Peel Valley in the boys’ comp.
“Lara Graham was probably our standout last year but this year’s side is well-rounded so if we lose a couple of quick wickets we are able to rebuild,” Lewis said.
Isabella Cameron is an excited young lady.
“My brother plays and dad is the coach,” she said.
“I suppose that is where my passion for cricket started.”
“This year I’ve played in the Tamworth Under 12 Blues, Peel Valley, North West and played three years above my age group in the Central North Under 15s team.
“Ellyse Perry and Tamworth’s Erin Osborne are my role models – they are awesome cricketers.”
