Seven referees will join the players for the four-day World Cup, Tamworth Oztag development officer Pam Potts said.
“We’ve never had this many referees go to a major tournament before,” Potts said.
“We’d have 20 or more players but to have this many refs is great.
“You can’t play without refs and it’s great to see them get credit.”
She said while there are seven refs, two of them will be “assessing referees up there”.
“Semmsie (Garry Semms) and Trevor (Wann) will be assessing all the referees up there and allocating them to all the big finals playoffs.”
She said the World Cup had attracted players from ages 16 through to 50 and from all over the world.
“Some of the countries have been formed from players in Australia but a number of countries, such as New Zealand, Ireland and England, are flying in too.
“It’s going to be a massive week at Mooloolaba.”
Potts wishes all the players and referees well and thanks them all for helping put Tamworth “on the Oztag map”.
Tamworth will also host the GJ Gardner Homes 2016 State Cup on March 11/12/13.
“This is an an amazing honour for the second year running,” Potts said.
Trials were held last Sunday with two more sets of trials on Sunday, December 13 and Tuesday, December 15.
Players must attend at least one of the three trials to be eligible for selection.
