TWO Tamworth men have won this year’s muddy obstacle race.
The Suck It Up Buttercup: Buttercups vs. Superheroes obstacle race, saw about 1000 people from across NSW and Queensland throwing themselves over walls, through the mud and into an ice bath as they challenged themselves to finish the course.
Race director Peter Manning said it was the best Suck It Up Buttercup so far, with 70 obstacles and mud pits across the 10km course.
“We had the guys from the Australian Obstacle Racers League from Queensland come and they did two continuous laps because it’s a sanctioned race for them,” he said.
Although the team from Queensland are seasoned obstacle racers, it was two local men who took out first and second place in the Dirty Dollars Post Office Hotel event.
Matt Everingham won in one hour and 49 minutes, netting $400, and Colin Ferguson finished in one hour and 53 minutes to come second, winning $100.
“They beat the obstacles racers even though it was the first obstacle race for both,” Mr Manning said.
The Gold Coast’s Laura Newton was the first female across the line, winning $400, in two hours and 11 minutes and she is a dedicated obstacle runner.
Mr Manning said a lot of competitors embraced the super hero theme and, for the young runners, there was a 5km course for children and their parents.
“It’s not a normal kind of run and people love to get into the mud and have a good time,” he said. “There are teams who help each other out, which is good for team building. It’s great to see people’s faces as they cross the line.”
Next year’s event is being planned for September or October.
